I believe i saw the same thing.  I live in Irvine and was walking home near Harvard and Alton aroung 6 pm when I saw somthing coming from the west very near John Wayne airport.  There are always recognizable planes around this area but this object had lights that were very different.  The lights were mostly gold but had some other colors as well.  Most noticable was that the lights appeared to spray out in front of it in a sweeping and fairlyconsitent manner.  It was moving much slower than an airplane would and was not  too high up as it moved in my direction.  Because the craft was not moving at a speed consistent with an airplane, I thought it might be a helicoptor but since when it was directly above me there was no sound.  Finally as it was directly above me in moved nearly straight up and finally disappeared out of sight.  By the time I realized I should take a photo it was fairly high up above me but I took a picture with my cell phone.  When you zoom in, the object appears as a colorful rod.  I thought it might be a weather balloon because of its movement and lack of sound but the lights make me doubt it was and besides, why would weather balloons be let off at night?
