Further Description of Sighting: At first, I dismissed the object as Jupiter because of the brightness and location. A few minutes later, Jupiter rose above the tree line, making me very curious and pointing out the object to a friend. Within in seconds it began to fade, came back to full brightness, and slowly faded away, all within about 30 seconds. Neither of us detected any movement. We did not see any clouds or contrails that would have explained the fading. It was brighter than the ISS or Shuttle, but not quite as bright as Jupiter. I didn’t fit the characteristics of aircraft landing lights or of a helicopter spot light because of the slow fade time and statioinary position. I suppose a meteor could have been coming directly at us, but lasted too long and showed no evidence of breaking up or burning up. Having nothing to base this on, my guess is the observation of an exploding star would take hours or even days to view.
