Further Description of Sighting: I was on a bike ride in Montauk with a friend when we noticed a bright object in the sky. It resembled a large flash light beam being shined downward. Within the beam was a fog or very unusually wide vapor trail. The light seemed to vanish leaving behind the fog which slowly dissapated. I find this near unexplainable for a few reasons.
1) If this was some kind of rocket or man made craft it would have launched from the ground and left a trail from its origin, instead the “trail” or fog began in mid air.
2) The width of the “trail” seemed too wide to match the velocity of the object. When a plane leaves a vapor trail it is usually thin and long, it’s width reflects the speed at which the plane was traveling.
3) I am not familiar with and propulsion systems that emit a bright white light, I saw a shuttle launch out of Cape Canaveral and the thrusters were a orange/red.
