Date of Sighting: This would have been August 8-10, 2004. We left Panama City Beach and with a day or so, a strong tropical storm came in over that area.
Location of Sighting: Panama City Beach, FL outside The Osprey around 9:30 pm
Shape(s) of Object(s) (If Known): The lights appeared in a straight line down, four white lights and one red light
Color(s) of Object(s) (If Known): Four white lights and one red light
Number of Object(s) (If Known): 5
Distance of Object(s) in sky (If Known): Unknown, but it was a cloudy night that night and no stars could be seen. So, whatever I saw was within the cloud cover.
Direction of Travel for Object(s) (If Known): The lights were stationary… they turned on, remained still and then turned off
Other Known Object(s) (For possible reference, or contrast): These were very bright lights. A star would not even come close. A full moon would be much to large… This was more like the size of car’s headlight at maybe something like 1/4 a mile. The red light, last and lowest in the string, appeared larger, maybe 1.5 times as large as the white lights.
Further Description of Sighting: Ok… We (me, my wife and my daughter) were outback of the Osprey playing shuffle board in the back by the outside bar area. I was looking out over the beach when suddenly, at about 35-40 degrees up from the horizon, four white lights appeared followed by a red light at the bottom. The lights came on in a sort of fast sequence; IE, they came on one at a time, forming a straight line down and each was spaced by the same spacing… about 1/2 inch at arms length.
This was a cloudy night and no stars were visible, so whatever it was was inside the cloud cover.
The lights were not on for long. I pointed and told my family to look… they turned, saw them and ignored them, and went back to playing their game of shuffleboard. I, on the other hand, was stunned! As they (my family) turned away, within a couple more seconds the white lights went out in the same rhythm and timing as they came on… one after the other… except for the larger red light. That red light stayed on for a short period more, maybe another ten to twenty seconds. (I may not have this exact, since I was just speachless at this point.) As I tried to see what could have made these lights, no shape appeared, just blackness. I saw no movement of anykind and the lights did not re-appear that night, as I stayed out on the beach and awake until well into the early morning hours.
I am reporting this now because I just returned from Splash in Panama City Beach today. The entire week, this incident was back on my mind. I have told very few people, but I think I have found a good place to finally report this.
Has anyone else had a similar experience in that area?
PS The shuffleboard may have been at the place immediately next to the Osprey. I believe both hotels were associated by the same owner, since we used to get mail promoting both locations.
